Evening talk from Paul Sedgwick, Deputy Ranger & Managing Director of Windsor & Rural

Around one hundred Friends and their guests gathered at the York Club on Tuesday, October 10 to hear Paul Sedgwick, Deputy Ranger & Managing Director of Windsor & Rural, give us an update on what has been happening on the Windsor Estate over the past year.

Coronation Grove

Paul began by explaining more about the trees that have been planted in the Great Park including the new Coronation Grove of 58 mixed British woodland trees near the Royal School.

There is one tree for each of the Commonwealth countries and one for His Majesty The King and one for Queen Camilla.   These trees include English oak, field maple, small-leaved lime, black poplar, beech and copper beech.

Landscape reinstatement

Next, we heard more about the landscape work going on in Windsor Great Park following a review the team did of an Ordnance Survey of the land from 1840.

The programme involves reinstating hedgerows up to six metres (19 feet) wide made up of British plants.  Across Windsor Great Park and the Rural portfolio, up to 60km (37 miles) have been planted, with a further 120km (74 miles) still planned.

Sustainability

Windsor Great Park on target to become net zero by 2030 through the increased use of electric vehicles and the use of solar power and hydro power.

A new building being constructed at Mezel Hill in Windsor Great Park to store Royal Collection Trust retail items will be totally powered by solar panels.

Solar panels for The Savill Garden Visitor Centre are under consideration, particularly because the building with all its facilities requires a significant amount of energy to operate.
